In brief: Remittances slump in El Salvador

* According to the latest figures from El Salvador’s central bank (BCR), remittance inflows totalled US$439.6m in March 2020, a 10.68% drop on the March 2019 figure. This brings the total so far this year to US$1.3bn, a 1.42% increase on the same period in 2019. Remittances in 2019 totalled US$5.65bn. The slump in remittances, which accounted for 20.7% of El Salvador’s GDP on the latest (2018) World Bank figures, was widely expected due to the impact of coronavirus (Covid-19).
