EL SALVADOR: Bukele issues further challenge to top court

President Nayib Bukele’s refusal on three occasions to heed rulings by the constitutional chamber (SC) of the supreme court (CSJ) relating to the detention of individuals in the framework of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is attracting mounting international condemnation. Amid other signs of his apparent authoritarianism and lack of regard for the country’s institutions - as evidenced by his recent deployment of the military to pressure legislators [WR-20-06] -  it has led United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to express concern about the possible erosion of the rule of law in El Salvador.
