In brief: Panama’s biggest mine suspends workers’ contracts

* Minera Panamá, the local subsidiary of Canada’s First Quantum Minerals Ltd, has announced the suspension of all workers’ contracts at the Cobre Panama mine, the largest mine in the country. The announcement, which affects some 7,000 workers, was not a surprise, after Panama's President Laurentino Cortizo announced the closure of the copper and gold mine earlier this month after a mine worker died on 4 April of coronavirus (Covid-19).
