MEXICO: Beer plant cancellation

Mexico’s deputy interior minister, Diana Álvarez, announced on 23 March that the national water commission (Conagua) would not issue the relevant permits to US brewer Constellation Brands to continue building a new beer plant in the city of Mexicali, Baja California state. The company already owns and operates two other plants in Mexico which supply the US market. With this project, worth some US$1.4bn, it was aiming to increase its production by 5m hectolitres. It was estimated that the plant, which was already 70% complete, would create between 3,000 and 4,000 jobs during three years of construction and 750 permanent positions once it entered into operations, which was scheduled for this year.
