In brief: Air travel industry recoils at Argentina flight ban

* The International Air Transport Association (Iata), the Airports Council International - Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC), and the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (Alta), have addressed a letter to the Argentine government led by President Alberto Fernández urgently requesting that it reconsider a decision to ban until 1 September all domestic and international commercial flights, as well as the sale of airline tickets, as part of efforts to limit coronavirus (Covid-19) contagions. The letter stresses that decree 144/2020, issued on 27 April by Argentina’s civil aviation authority (Anac), will affect the “entire commercial aviation value chain”, putting at risk thousands of jobs. Many companies in the industry still need to cover about 50% fixed costs, and would not be able to survive this resolution. The air transport associations note that the travel and tourism sector contributes 10% to Argentina’s GDP and generates around 2m (9.4%) of the country’s jobs, making it an essential part of the country’s economic recovery.
