CHILE: Piñera inflames tensions

Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera suggested this week that an impending recession associated with the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic might make it necessary to re-evaluate holding a plebiscite on reforming the constitution in October. Piñera’s comments, in an interview on 26 April, were roundly rejected by the political opposition and even appeared to catch off-guard some of the leaders in his ruling right-of-centre Chile Vamos coalition. Meanwhile, in violation of lockdown restrictions, protesters took to the streets of Santiago once again to express their discontent. A plebiscite on reforming the dictatorship-era constitution is the most significant concession the Piñera administration has made to protesters since social unrest broke out in Chile last October.
