* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the latest unemployment figures, which show that the unemployment rate has risen to 8.2% in the first three months of the year. This is up from 7.8% in the rolling quarter to February 2020, and a one percentage point increase on the unemployment rate in January-March 2019, according to the INE. The uptick in unemployment, which was already on the rise due to the social unrest which has been gripping Chile since October 2019, comes amid the global economic crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, with measures to contain it implemented in Chile from March. The INE notes that its data collection method changed from mid-March onwards due to these restrictions on movement.
