In brief: Guatemala to start easing Covid-19 restrictions

* Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei has announced that some shops and businesses will reopen today (4 May) in line with plans to lift containment measures implemented to stop the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19). Giammattei also said that restaurants, bars, schools, and universities would remain closed while restrictions on public transport, sports, and religious and other types of public gatherings would remain in place. Amid efforts to reopen the economy, which the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac) forecasts will shrink by 1.3% in 2020, Giammattei announced on 29 April that the state of public calamity he first decreed on 5 March limiting freedom of movement and constitutional freedoms would remain in place for a further 30 days.
