In brief: Costa Rica’s Alvarado warns of rising fiscal deficit

* President Carlos Alvarado has warned that Costa Rica’s fiscal deficit could rise by 2.4 percentage points due to the impact of coronavirus (Covid-19). He made his comments in his annual balance sheet marking his two years in office. The country’s fiscal deficit closed at 6.96% of GDP in 2019, the worst in three decades. In his annual address President Alvarado also forecast that the economy would shrink 3.6% in 2020 due to the pandemic.
