VENEZUELA: Drug charge bombshell escalates political crisis

US attorney general William Barr’s indictment of Nicolás Maduro on 26 March, the first of a sitting foreign president since Panama’s Manuel Noriega in 1988, sent shockwaves through Venezuela. This was a decisive statement of confrontation, a step beyond even the stringent sanctions that Maduro describes as “economic warfare” and made the prospect of a peaceful solution to the country’s long-running political crisis seem more distant than ever.
