* The Bahamas’ attorney general
Carl Bethel has said that the government “
regrets the apparent decision of the EU [European Union] Commission to signal an intention to add The Bahamas to a Blacklist which the EU Parliament mandates that the Commission maintain”. His remarks follow a draft document, seen by
Reuters, of countries which the EU considers are failing to do enough to address tax evasion and money laundering, which include The Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, Panama (included on the previous list), and Nicaragua. Bethel expressed particular frustration “
in light of an earlier public commitment made by the EU Commission to engage in discussions with potentially affected countries prior to placing them on their Blacklist”. The document published by
Reuters has also prompted responses from Jamaica, Barbados, and Panama, which have similarly expressed frustration.
