In brief: Mexico’s auto sales fall to historic low

* According to figures published by Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi), vehicle sales in Mexico fell by 64.5% in April compared with the same month in 2019. While 98,346 vehicles were sold in April 2019, only 34,903 were sold in April 2020, the lowest figures recorded for vehicle sales in April since Inegi began collecting the data in 2006. The Inegi figures also show that vehicle sales in March 2020 totalled 87,517. Mexico’s automobile distributors’ association (Amda) attributed the poor result to a deterioration in families’ economic situations, as well as uncertainty generated by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the measures taken to contain the virus.
