In brief: Brazil sees monthly deflation in April

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for the national consumer price index (IPCA), according to which monthly inflation was negative in April, at -0.31%. This is the lowest figure recorded for monthly inflation since August 1998 and follows on from 0.07% monthly inflation in March. Food and drink was one of just two categories to register positive inflation in April, with a 1.79% variation, while a sharp decrease in fuel prices drove a -2.66% variation in prices in the transport category. “The April result was strongly influenced by the fall in the price of fuel,” Pedro Kislanev, director of Ibge’s IPCA research, said, noting that an increase in demand with more people at home due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic had influenced the increase in food prices. Accumulated inflation for 2020 stands at 0.22%, and inflation in the 12 months to April 2020 stands at 2.4%.
