In brief: New initiative to reopen Mexican factories

* Luis Aguirre Lang, president of the Consejo Nacional de la Industria Maquiladora y Manufacturera de Exportación (Index), an organisation which represents maquila export factories, announced a new virtual platform, ‘B2B Covid-19’, which will allow companies from the public and private sector to register what medical equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) they need, and link them with Mexican factories which can meet their demand. In a press conference with representatives of two other national business organisations - Carlos Salazar Lomelí, president of the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE), and Francisco Cervantes Díaz, president of the Confederación de Cámaras Industriales de México (Concamin) - the three business leaders announced that the platform will go live on 20 May. Aguirre noted that Mexico’s industrial sector registered a US$64bn trade surplus in 2019, exporting US$270bn, with 80% of exports heading to the US. Aguirre added that Mexico is currently under pressure from the US to reopen factories to safeguard the production chain.
