* Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has asked that the Casa da Moeda national mint bring forward the planned printing of R$9bn (US$1.55bn) worth of banknotes to this month, as less cash has been circulating in the economy during the coronavirus (Covid-19) emergency.
“The request aims to build security stocks and mitigate any consequences of the hoarding phenomenon that has been observed since the start of the pandemic”, the BCB notes. Annual inflation remains low in Brazil, standing at 2.4% in April, but the value of the real has plunged this year, with the exchange rate pushing R$6/US$1 in recent days, and the US dollar appreciating 45% against the real in 2020 so far.
