In brief: Chile’s wine industry expects sharp drop in exports

* Chile’s principal winemakers’ association, Vinos de Chile, has predicted a 20% fall in foreign sales in 2020, its commercial director Angélica Valenzuela told Spanish newswire EFE, citing a significant drop in sales to China due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. In its Covid-19 report published on 12 May, Vinos de Chile noted that China consumes wine most abundantly during the week-long holiday for the Chinese New Year (11-17 February), which this year was not celebrated to traditional levels. Additionally, China did not stock up on wine during the pandemic like other countries, because in China wine is generally consumed outside of the house. Although Valenzuela remains optimistic about the future of Chile’s wine industry, she added that some boutique wine producers might be forced to close.
