In brief: Further easing of lockdown in Costa Rica

* The Costa Rican government led by President Carlos Alvarado has announced the further easing of lockdown measures implemented to stop the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) as part of a state of national emergency declared on 16 March. Among other things, Costa Rica’s 12 national parks and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve will be reopened under strict new sanitary guidelines, operating at 50% of their capacity to avoid crowds. Meanwhile hotels with up to 20 rooms will be allowed to reopen with new sanitary protocols, at 50% capacity. The government had announced last month that it would begin reopening the economy following a continued decline in the number of active infections (as of 17 May Costa Rica had reported 863 Covid-19 cases and ten deaths). Non-essential businesses such as cinemas, gyms, and hair salons were allowed to reopen on 1 May, but under reduced hours, and with strict rules on the number of clients allowed at any one time. On 24 April Costa Rica’s central bank (BCCR) released a new report which forecast that the country’s GDP will contract by 3.6% in 2020 due to the economic impact of Covid-19.
