In brief: Chile’s first quarter GDP growth surprises

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released new figures which show Chile’s GDP grew 0.4% in the first quarter of 2020 compared with the same period the previous year. This compares with the 2.1% year-on-year contraction registered in the last quarter of 2019, due to the widespread social protests in late 2019 over inequality and the high cost of living. With the added challenge of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic prompting a global economic crisis from March, economists had expected Chile’s first quarter growth to be negative. BCCh figures regarding the monthly economic activity index (Imacec) for March 2020 showed this fell 3.5% compared with March 2019. In its latest projections, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean is forecasting that Chile’s GDP will contract by 4% in 2020.
