In brief: Export lobbies warn of impact of Costa Rica cargo restrictions

* The Central American federation of export chambers (Fecaexca) has warned of trucks being stranded due to Costa Rica’s decision to restrict the entry of foreign cargo trucks into the country as part of efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19). According to Fecaexca estimates, there are currently over 940 trucks stranded at the Nicaragua-Costa Rica border: 384 from Guatemala, 284 from El Salvador, 103 from Costa Rica, 93 from Nicaragua, 62 from Honduras, and 16 from Panama. Fecaexca and other regional (and local) business lobbies, such as the Comité Consultivo de la Integración Económica (CCIE), which groups the business chambers and federations of Central America, have warned that the restrictions could affect the regional supply of “indispensable products to combat Covid-19”, as well as food.
