In brief: Mexican gov’t under pressure over unemployment

* Mexico’s largest business lobby, the Confederación Patronal de la República Mexicana (Coparmex), has called on the government to act urgently to prevent further unemployment in the private sector, which it estimates will reach 1.3m people by June as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, and the lack of government support to mitigate its impact. In a videoconference press briefing, Coparmex called on the executive led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to “break the piggybank” and introduce a 50% wage subsidy for the 19.9m private sector workers still employed.
