In brief: Hernández calls for phased reopening of Honduran economy

* President Juan Orlando Hernández has ruled out reopening the Honduran economy outright as of 1 June, with the country set to remain under strict lockdown. Hernández has instead called for a reopening in phases and by region, with consultation from epidemiologists and the national risk management system (Sinager). He said this was necessary to prioritise public health in the face of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The previous day Hernández announced the reactivation of the construction sector in various phases, to begin within four weeks under strict biosecurity protocols. On 18 May Hernández announced an inter-institutional roundtable, comprising different sectors, for the “intelligent management of the pandemic and opening of the economy”. The latest projections from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac) forecast that Honduras's economy will contract by 2.8% in 2020.
