In brief: Colombian gov’t urged to subsidise public transport

* Bogotá Mayor Claudia López has urged the national government to subsidise Colombia’s public transport systems to ensure their survival through the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, after Bogotá’s Transmilenio bus rapid transit system warned that without financial support, it will have to cease operations in August. López reported that Transmilenio's income has fallen by 84% during the national quarantine, and that weekly losses of at least Col$31bn (US$8.1m) will continue for as long as bus capacities are limited to 35%. She warned that for any process of economic reactivation to be effective, the national government will have to finance public transport systems in cities across Colombia.
