Argentina’s default number nine: the enigmatic one

Argentina defaulted on its foreign debt on 22 May, the ninth default in the country’s history. Unlike the last big default - number seven in late 2001 - this was a relatively quiet affair, with little pomp and circumstance. Officials continued trying to reach a deal with creditors. As the government approaches its first six months in office, the default raises intriguing questions about President Alberto Fernández’s political game plan.
