COSTA RICA-REGION: Border closure tests integration

New border restrictions imposed by Costa Rica’s government on foreign truckers as part of efforts to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is serving as the latest test for Central American integration efforts. With the Central American Integration System (Sica) already forecasting that the sub-region’s GDP could contract by as much as 6.8% this year, the spat is likely to cause further damage to local economies and trade, as well as jeopardising regional efforts to combat the pandemic.
