For several weeks now, the coronavirus (Covid-19) public health emergency in Brazil has been deepening in parallel with an unfolding political crisis. Both have worsened over the course of the last week, with the latter often overshadowing the former. On 22 May, the director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme, Michael Ryan, described South America as “a new epicentre” of the coronavirus pandemic, with Brazil “clearly the most affected”.
