* Bolivia’s interim government has decreed that the country will enter a phase of ‘flexible quarantine’ from 1 June, under which certain restrictions imposed to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic will be lifted, and responsibility for quarantine measures will be devolved to departmental and municipal governments. Communications Minister
Isabel Fernández claimed that more people will be allowed to return to work, although the exact details of new regulations will be left up to local authorities to decide. She added that the country’s borders will remain closed for now, while “
public events, cultural activities, gyms, festivals, and political events are still suspended”. This ‘flexible quarantine’ may alleviate
pressure on the interim government from those bearing the economic burden of quarantine - but with cases Covid-19 spiking in recent days (a record 632 were recorded on 28 May), this loosening of controls could exacerbate the spread of the virus.
