Brazil: On 24 May US President
Donald Trump signed a proclamation which prohibits entry into the US for any foreign nationals coming from Brazil. The decision came after Brazil’s health ministry published figures revealing that Brazil had surpassed Russia to become the country with the second-highest number of coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in the world, behind the US. Following recommendations from the US Department of Homeland Security and its intergovernmental partners such as the Centre for Disease Control, President Trump’s proclamation states that any
“aliens, as immigrants or non-immigrants” who have been in Brazil during the 14-day period preceding their entry to the US will not be permitted into the country as their presence poses
“the potential for undetected transmission” and
“threatens the security of our transportation system and infrastructure and the national security”. The restrictions were brought forward by two days to come into effect from 26 May. No end date for the restrictions was outlined by President Trump other than they shall remain in effect until he decides to terminate them.
