In brief: Costa Rica announces reopening of border with Nicaragua

* Costa Rica’s public security minister Michael Soto has confirmed that the Peñas Blancas border point between Costa Rica and Nicaragua will reopen. Soto’s announcement follows an agreement signed on 30 May by representatives from the Central American transport federation (Fecatrans) and various Central American Integration System (Sica) institutions to resolve the dispute stemming from decrees establishing border restrictions for foreign truckers imposed by Costa Rica last month to stop the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19). Under the latest agreement Costa Rica will allow foreign truckers to remain in the country for five days to drop off their cargo and leave the country, up from the previous 72 hours. Among other things the agreement also provides for the creation of a working table between Fecatrans, Sica, the council of ministers for economic integration (Comieco) and the Central American economic integration system (Sieca) to meet in five days and evaluate the possibility of foreign truckers remaining for longer in the country.
