* Authorities from Paraguay’s ministry of public works & communications (MOPC) and Itaipú Binacional, the Brazilian-Paraguayan binational company that administers the Itaipú hydroelectric dam, have signed a contract with the Prointec consortium, which comprises construction firms Intec, Prosul, and Innovación y Excelencia, for the design and eventual construction of a bridge over the Paraguay River. In a statement, the MOPC announced that the bridge will connect Paraguay’s Capitán Carmelo Peralta district (Alto Paraguay department) with Brazil’s Porto Murtinho (Mato Grosso do Sul state). The price agreed was ₲27.55bn (US$4.1m), which MOPC highlights is 45% less than the ₲50bn initially foreseen. The project will be financed by Itaipú Binacional and will be coordinated by the MOPC and Brazil’s department of infrastructure and transport (DNIT).
