In brief: Peru’s mining exports hit hard by pandemic

* Peruvian extractive industry lobby Sociedad Nacional de Minería, Petróleo y Energía (SNMPE) has highlighted the significant impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on Peru’s mining exports. According to the SNMPE’s export figures for April, the value of copper exports fell by 61% compared with April 2019, from US$1.31bn to US$513m, while the value of gold exports fell by 49.6%, from US$596m to US$300m. Decreased export volumes (-48.6% year-on-year for copper, and -61.5% for gold) were the primary cause of this decline, although copper exports have also been affected by a drop in the metal’s value. The SNMPE noted that in the first four months of 2020, the total value of Peru’s mining exports fell by 19% year-on-year, from US$8.67bn to US$7.02bn.
