In brief: Chile’s 2020 GDP forecast tumbles

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has published its monthly economic expectations survey (EEE) for June, in which the consensus GDP growth forecast for this year was revised down to a 4.8% contraction. This is lower than the the projected -2.7% GDP growth in the May edition of the survey, in which the BCCh interviews a group of academics, consultants, and finance executives. It comes as the World Bank (WB) has published its own revised forecasts, now predicting a 4.3% contraction in GDP in Chile this year. The EEE’s revised GDP forecast is the latest in a series of worrying economic indicators published in Chile in recent weeks, as the country struggles to mitigate the economic effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
