New US military presence in Colombia fuels tensions
As we go to press on 11 June a small group of US soldiers is poised to complete two weeks of compulsory quarantine in Colombia ahead of its deployment with a view to enhancing counter-narcotics cooperation between the US and Colombian security forces. The arrival of the US Army’s 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB), announced by US Southern Command (Southcom), triggered controversy, with President Iván Duque accused of contravening the constitution by taking the unilateral decision to invite a foreign military force on to Colombian soil. Several opposition parties, including the Fuerza Alternativa Revolucionaria del Común (Farc), also questioned the decision, although Venezuela’s de facto government led by Nicolás Maduro, normally quick to denounce foreign military intervention at every turn, remained uncharacteristically reticent.
