BRAZIL: Government undermined by data debacle

The Brazilian government’s website presenting national data on the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic went down for several hours on 6 June. When it came back online, all but the figures for Covid-19 cases and deaths in the past 24 hours had been removed. Although the original portal has since been reinstated following a widespread backlash and a judicial order, the government’s credibility has been seriously undermined by this move, which many say smacks of authoritarianism and attempts at data manipulation.
