PANAMA: Stops and starts over lockdown easing

Having begun the process of reopening Panama’s economy, shuttered to stop the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19), President Laurentino Cortizo was recently forced to reintroduce some restrictions in certain parts of the country which overall has the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Central America (17,233 cases and 403 deaths as of 9 June). This followed reports of a rise in the transmission rate as well as protests last week against the ending of the quarantine staged by trade unions. It once again highlights the difficulty facing governments which are under pressure to balance the impact of economic paralysis against the rising death toll from the pandemic.
