ARGENTINA: Quarantine leaves heavy economic toll

The quarantine measures adopted by the government led by President Alberto Fernández to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) may be limiting the loss of life due to the pandemic in Argentina. But the latest economic indicators provide compelling evidence that the measures are decimating the national economy. Fernández insists that the government’s main priority remains to save lives, but amid growing warnings that the collapse in economic activity also implies enormous human costs, the pressure on Fernández to expedite the easing of the quarantine to save the economy and prevent widespread human suffering is rising.
