In brief: Panama’s aviation industry at risk

* The International Air Transport Association (Iata) has called on the Panamanian government to provide financial support for the aviation industry – hit hard by the economic effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic – in order to preserve Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport’s status as an important regional hub. Peter Cerdá, Iata’s regional vice president for the Americas, claimed that “as one of the few countries in the region that has not provided any type of financial support”, Panama risks “jeopardising the competitiveness” of Tocumen, home to national flag carrier Copa Airlines’ ‘Hub of the Americas’ connection centre. Cerdá called for the government to support the industry by providing financial support while international flights remain grounded, and by offering emergency tax relief for affected companies. He noted that the airline industry and related sectors represent more than 14% of Panama’s GDP.
