Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has said that Brazil took
“significant” steps to counter the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, more so than other countries such as Mexico, and that it also benefits from a relatively strong capacity to absorb shocks. Speaking to Spanish daily
El País, Georgieva praised the Brazilian government’s fiscal measures and the actions taken by the central bank (BCB) as
“very strong and adequate”. However, she did note that Brazil is one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic, and that transparency of information and coordination between different levels of government are vital to managing the epidemiological situation.
