In brief: Ecuadorean workers launch legal campaign

* The Ecuadorean labour parliament, which brings together a range of trade unions and workers’ organisations, has condemned various aspects of the government’s economic response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic as unconstitutional. Labour parliament president, Jaime Arciniegas, announced that a complaint had been filed with the constitutional court regarding the non-payment of the government’s required 40% contribution to pension funds, claiming that while this threshold had not been met in 2019, payments have stopped completely since the start of the pandemic. Arciniegas noted that a further complaint is being prepared regarding the proposed reduction of the working day in the public sector from eight to six hours, with salaries to be reduced accordingly. This legal action adds to the pressure of recent public protests against the government’s emergency austerity measures.
