In brief: Argentina’s steel production plummets in May

* Argentina’s steel association has published figures indicating that crude and sheet steel production in May totalled 194,300 tonnes (t) and 190,200t respectively, representing declines of 52.2% and 55.5% compared with the same month in 2019. In a statement, the association noted, however, that production had increased compared with April this year, by 81.4% and 74.2% respectively, as some areas of industry that had been paralysed by measures taken to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic had partially resumed production. As regards outlook, the statement notes that while activities such as small-scale construction have picked up somewhat, the “general panorama” regarding demand from steel consumers remains “very incipient”, with “orders that are a long way from enabling normal operations”.
