In brief: Brazil’s retail sector plunges in April

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures on the retail sector, which show that retail sales suffered their biggest monthly contraction in April since the historical series began in 2000. Retail sales in April fell by 16.8% compared with March 2020, and also plunged 16.8% year-on-year, reflecting the effects of social isolation measures taken to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The Ibge notes that April was the first full month of isolation measures, which took their toll on all aspects of retail, including in areas deemed essential such as supermarkets and pharmaceutical products, which had bucked the overall negative trend in the retail sector in March.
