Public transport at risk. On 20 May, Bogotá Mayor Claudia López urged the national government to take action to subsidise Colombia’s public transport systems, in order to ensure their survival through the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, and the resultant paralysis of economic activity. This came after Bogotá’s Transmilenio bus rapid transit system warned that without financial support, it will have to cease operations in August. López reported that Transmilenio’s income has fallen by 84% during the national quarantine, and that weekly losses of at least Col$31bn (US$8.1m) will continue for as long as bus capacities are limited to 35%, as per the social distancing recommendations that remain in place even as the economy is reopened. She warned that for any process of economic reactivation to be effective, the national government will have to finance public transport systems in cities across Colombia.
