MEXICO: Aviation industry wounded

Mexico’s air travel industry accounts for around 3.05% of the country’s GDP. It moves over 100m passengers per year to 134 international destinations through 70 airlines that operate in the country. However, as in the rest of the world, the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has severely disrupted air travel. At the start of May, 90% of Mexico’s air fleet was grounded, with a fall of up to 95% in air travel putting over 1.4m direct and indirect jobs at risk. The national chamber of air transport (Canaero) has called the crisis produced by Covid-19 the most catastrophic on record.
