In brief: Pandemic leaves millions without salary in Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest findings from its monthly national survey of households, adapted to the context of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, according to which 9.7m people were left without a salary income in the month of May. This represents over half (51.3%) of those whose jobs were suspended due to the pandemic and social distancing measures adopted to contain it, and 11.7% of the active workforce. “These are people who are considered part of the workforce, but whose salary has been suspended”, Ibge research director Cimar Azeredo explained. Domestic workers without a contract were the most affected by the salary loss, followed by informal workers, who work as employees in the public or private sectors without a contract. The Ibge found that 38.7% of Brazilian households received some kind of government help related to the pandemic in May (this proportion rises to 55% in the North and Northeast regions).
