In brief: DR confirms date for reopening tourism sector

* The Dominican Republic’s tourism minister, Francisco Javier García, has set 1 July as the date for the reopening the country’s tourism sector (which contributes around 8% of GDP) following the quarantine imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19), and announced the approval of health protocols for tourists. The announcement, which followed a meeting between government officials and representatives from the association of hotels and tourism (Asonahores), comes despite the fact that the government recently warned it was not yet ready to begin phase three of reopening the country’s economy, following a significant increase in the daily number of new Covid-19 cases. Yesterday the country registered 695 new cases, bringing the total to 28,631 - the highest in Central America and the Caribbean.
