Brazil beset by pandemic, politicking, and probes

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has always thrived off creating conflict and confusion. Both now dominate his government, and his country, perhaps more than he could ever have envisaged. Four months since the first coronavirus (Covid-19) case was recorded in Brazil, the outbreak shows no sign of slowing, deepening both the country’s public health emergency and the accompanying economic downturn. Rather than prompting a concerted political response, this has exacerbated institutional divisions and uncertainty. Tensions are being aggravated by a number of judicial investigations which are beginning to close in on Bolsonaro and his allies.
