VENEZUELA: Domestic rivals fight for international approval

In an interview with news website Axios this week, US President Donald Trump caused a stir by hinting he would “maybe think about” meeting with Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro - whose enthusiastic response to this statement was mirrored by the panicked reaction of his rival, Juan Guaidó. Trump was quick to clarify, insisting that “I would only meet with Maduro to discuss one thing: a peaceful exit from power” - but his comments nonetheless added to the perception that his support for Guaidó is somewhat half-hearted. In the same interview, Trump admitted that he had been ambivalent over recognising Guaidó as interim president: “I don’t think it was very meaningful one way or the other.”
