In brief: Mexico’s supreme court suspends new energy regulations

* Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) has issued a ruling which provisionally suspends new energy sector regulations issued by the federal government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which effectively gave Mexico’s state-run energy service Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) control of electricity transmission and distribution, sidelining private renewable electricity generators. The ruling is in line with a constitutional complaint filed by Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Competencia Económica (Cofece), an autonomous government institution whose purpose is to promote, protect and guarantee free market access and economic competition. The ruling has been well received by influential business lobby Confederación Patronal de la República Mexicana (Coparmex) which issued a statement highlighting that it “restores trust in private sector investments”.
