* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released figures which show that the unemployment rate from March to May was 11.2%, the highest level recorded since the historical series began in 2010, and an increase of four percentage points compared to the same period in 2019. The number of unemployed people has risen by 244,000 year-on-year, while 1.23m people have exited the workforce.
“These figures show the deep deterioration that the coronavirus [Covid-19] is causing on employment, household income, and economic activity. When sanitary conditions improve, we must rebuild our capacity to generate formal jobs, good-quality jobs, with social security”, Economy Minister
