BRAZIL: Coronavirus unrelenting, confusion unending

Ibaneis Rocha, the governor of Brazil’s Federal District (DF – the administrative region which encompasses the capital Brasília), declared a state of public calamity on 29 June due to the continuing coronavirus (Covid-19) emergency. This measure gives the DF urgent access to federal resources. Yet Rocha has simultaneously said that he will push forward with plans to reopen all sectors of the economy and schools by August and that the disease will be treated as if it were the flu – which he says should have been done since the beginning of the pandemic.
