MEXICO: Public security strategy once again under fire

Serious questions over the effectiveness of the national security strategy pursued by the Mexican government are being raised once again following a series of major incidents this week. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has advocated an integral security strategy, seeking to reduce criminality while at the same time promoting peace in the country. To achieve this, López Obrador said that while his government would continue to combat organised crime, it would adopt a non-confrontational approach and refrain from fighting criminal groups head on. But recent events show that even this approach may not prevent criminal organisations from lashing back at the authorities and carrying out generalised acts of violence.
